Children with cancer

It is rare for children and young people to get cancer. Many of the symptoms of cancer in young people are non-specific; this means that they could be caused by a number of different conditions. However, if you are concerned about your own or your child’s health, talk to your GP.

Once a diagnosis is made treatment will depend upon many factors the type of cancer , the age of the child, and the need for specialist treatment.

In Sussex children and young people are often treated on a 'shared care' programme which means they may attend a specialist paediatric cancer centre, perhaps in London, whilst also being cared for by local cancer specialists.

A key worker should be identified to offer local support provision that is accessible as required dependent on individual need.

For teenagers we would aim to ensure there is access  to services that offer supportive and psychological care.
