Liver cancer
Primary liver cancer is quite rare in the UK. There are several different types, but the main types are:
- Hepatoma (hepatocellular carcinoma) this is the most common. The cancer develops in the main liver cells. It usually stays in the liver, but it may spread to other organs. This cancer is often found in people with cirrhosis. There are other rarer types of hepatoma
- Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), which starts in the cells of the bile duct.
Other rare types of liver cancer:
- Hemangioendothelioma, which is cancer of the blood vessels.
- Sarcoma and angiosarcoma, which is cancer of the connective tissue in the liver.
- Hepatoblastoma which usually affects very young children.
Secondary liver cancer is more common in the UK than primary liver cancer.
If you have been told that you have secondary liver cancer, it has spread from somewhere else in your body.
