Vaginal cancer
Cancer of the vagina is rare. Secondary cancers in the vagina are more common than primary vaginal cancer, and spread usually comes from the cervix, or the lining of the womb (endometrium), or from other organs in close proximity such as the bladder or bowel.
Other very rare types of vaginal cancer are sarcoma, lymphoma and melanoma.
If the cancer is a rare primary vaginal cancer, there are two types:
- Squamous cell- which is the more common type and affects women between the ages of 50 and 70.
- Adenocarcinoma - this type usually affects women under 20, but may occasionally occur in other age groups.
