Enriching foods
Often people with cancer need more energy than usual. However increasing the amount you eat may be difficult, especially if you have a small appetite. To cope with this you can enrich your food by adding extra calories.
Milk
- Use fortified milk in drinks, on cereals and in cooking.
- Try to have one pint of whole milk daily.
- Use Horlicks, Ovaltine, Hot Chocolate to flavour milk.
Yoghurt
- Choose the thick and creamy types of yoghurt.
Fromage frais
- Add to fruit and cereals.
- Use in recipes, soups, casseroles and on salads.
Casseroles
- Try adding milk powder, cream, cheese, lentils and/or beans to casseroles.
Sauces
- Use cheese, cream, enriched milk, margarine and butter to make sauces with.
- Have sauces more often or use condensed soups.
Vegetables and potatoes
- Add grated cheese, butter and/or margarine.
- Try white or cheese sauce with vegetables.
Eggs
- Make sure that eggs are cooked so that both the yolk and white are hard.
- Try adding cheese, margarine and/or butter to egg dishes.
Soups
- Try making Cup-a-soup with enriched milk (see recipe on page 22).
- Adding cheese and/or cream to soups make them more nutritious.
Puddings
- Use custard, cream and ice-cream often with pudding.
- Try adding dried fruit, jam, honey and syrup.
- Try making jellies with evaporated milk.
Always try to avoid “diet” products as they usually do not have many calories in them.
