Holiday travel

After treatment many people wish to travel abroad. If a holiday is planned travel insurance is very important.

Both Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancerbacup offer some guidance on travel insurance in the sections linked in the box on the right of this page.

If you are travelling to Europe you will need to obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Patients who are taking a controlled drug as part of their treatment should check with the relevant embassy/consulate to enquire of any restrictions in the country to be visited, information may be found on the Home Office website.

It is essential to take a list of medications and a short summary of treatment to date. If the patient uses a Patient Held Record, they should take this as well.

We are grateful to Aintree Hospitals NHS Trust who have produced the attached leaflet for patients wanting to travel abroad whilst taking controlled drugs. (209kb PDF file)
